Alaska Airlines
The Challenge
Alaska Airlines launched three landmark inaugural international direct flight routes from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) in Spring 2026: Seattle to Rome (FCO), Seattle to London Heathrow (LHR), and Seattle to Reykjavik (KEF). To mark each milestone, Alaska Airlines sought immersive gate experiences that would surprise and delight departing passengers, generate brand enthusiasm, and create a memorable send-off that authentically reflected the culture and spirit of each destination.
The activations needed to transform standard airport gate environments into culturally rich, multi-sensory celebrations — all within the operational constraints of a live airport terminal — while delivering tangible, branded gifts that passengers would bring with them on their journeys.
Program Event Overview
Three distinct gate activations were produced across April and May 2026, each designed around the unique identity of its destination city. Every activation included a fully transformed gate environment, curated food and beverage moments, live entertainment, and branded gift pouches for all departing passengers.

Activation 1: Seattle → Rome (FCO)
April 28, 2026
Inspired by the vibrant atmosphere of an Italian Festa in a sun-drenched piazza, the FCO gate was transformed into a celebration of la dolce vita. Guests encountered sidewalk café vignettes, a classic gelato cart by Gelatiamo, and a live cannoli station — a standout moment where Chef Fabio Carratelli, Chef/Owner of Galileo’s Pizzeria, hand-piped fresh cannoli alongside Alaska Airlines CEO Ben Minicucci, creating an intimate and joyful interaction between airline leadership and passengers. DJ Eliogold provided a soundtrack of Italian house music to energize the atmosphere.
Activation 2: Seattle → London Heathrow (LHR)
May 21, 2026
Honoring the prestigious Chelsea in Bloom festival, the gate was reimagined as a lush London garden. Luscious fresh floral installations anchored garden-style seating vignettes, creating an elegant and immersive British garden party atmosphere. Passengers were treated to freshly baked pastries from beloved Seattle institution Macrina Bakery alongside specialty hot tea service featuring London Fog and English Rose preparations. A live string quartet provided sophisticated ambient music, transporting guests across the Atlantic before they ever boarded the plane.
Each of the 330 departing passengers received a branded gift pouch containing:
- Branded luggage tag, provided by the Port of Seattle
- Branded travel tea cup
- Branded cloud-shape sleep mask
- British slang card
Activation 3: Seattle → Reykjavik (KEF)
May 28, 2026
Celebrating Iceland’s raw natural beauty and vibrant cultural spirit, the KEF gate activation leaned into the country’s connection to nature and its legendary Eurovision enthusiasm. A dramatic SEA–KEF call-letter installation draped in lush, verdant greenery served as the centerpiece of the environment, evoking Iceland’s breathtaking landscapes. Gallery-style frames showcased stunning Icelandic scenes, giving passengers a visual preview of the destination that awaited them. Eurovision-inspired music filled the gate, adding energy and celebration to the send-off.
Each of the 220 departing passengers received a branded gift pouch containing:
- Branded luggage tag, provided by the Port of Seattle
- Icelandic snacks and treats
- Icelandic phrase card
Results
The three inaugural gate activations collectively delivered an immersive, brand-forward experience to nearly 900 passengers across three international routes, marking a significant milestone in Alaska Airlines’ expansion of direct international service from Seattle.
Beyond the quantitative metrics, each activation generated significant organic social sharing potential, with distinctive, photogenic environments — from the gelato cart and cannoli station in the Italian piazza to the floral Chelsea garden and the Icelandic greenery installation — designed to inspire passenger-generated content and word-of-mouth excitement around Alaska Airlines’ new routes.
