The best brand activation ideas start with a goal. You might want awareness in a new market, more people trying your product, or a way to thank the customers who already love you. Whatever the goal, the experience has to be something people actually want to walk up to.

Each example below illustrates a program our team at Southport Marketing collaborated on, built and executed. We’ve been producing brand activations since 2008, and these 12 examples show the approaches we take to deliver successful, impactful programs with real results.

How to Choose the Right Activation Idea

Before getting to work, we ask four questions:

  • What is the goal and expected outcome of this activation? Awareness, trial, sign-ups, sales and loyalty each call for a different experience.
  • Where is your audience already spending time? A stadium plaza, a race expo and an airport gate all work, for very different reasons.
  • What footprint and budget are you working with? Every program is unique, and the idea has to fit both.
  • How will you measure it? Pick your metrics before the build. Our guide to measuring experiential marketing ROI covers the options.

Sports and Sponsorship Activation Ideas

Sports fans show up early, stay late and love a reason to compete. These activations put that energy to work for the brand.

1. Turn a Title Sponsorship Into a Fan Destination

When Bank of Utah became title sponsor of the Bank of Utah Championship at Black Desert Resort in St. George, it was the bank’s first partnership on a national stage. The goal was to stand out and show the community what makes the bank different.

We built The Backyard, an open, welcoming space with a golf simulator challenge, mini golf, a photo op and a giving tree for the bank’s charity partner, The Policy Project. Lounge seating looked out over the lava fields and mountains, so fans had a reason to stay a while.

The results: 90% of fans at the tournament were aware of The Backyard and Bank of Utah, 40% visited it, and more than 800 golfers took a swing in the simulator.

2. Put the Product in Fans’ Hands at a Pro Event

TaylorMade launched its Stealth driver with activations at two PGA Tour events, the Farmers Insurance Open and the Genesis Invitational. We built a product trial, a virtual driving range, an outdoor lounge for watching the tournament and a lounge where fans got a first look at the MyTaylorMade+ app. Fans could even tour the TaylorMade PGA Tour truck, where the pros get their clubs dialed in.

The results: more than 4,000 consumers engaged with the experience, and social media takeovers earned 200,000+ impressions before the driver hit stores.

Southport Marketing has been a pivotal partner in key TaylorMade’s marketing initiatives related to retail/associate engagement, training programs and events over the past 3+ years. They excel in creative thinking and have a strong commitment to brand storytelling.

3. Build a Pre-Game Fan Fest

Pre-game crowds are some of the most excited audiences a brand can reach. For the 2023 NWSL Championship at Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego, we produced the public Fan Fest plus the CarMax Skills Challenge, which aired nationally on CBS during halftime. The footprint brought together four league partners, a main stage headlined by Bishop Briggs and a photo op with the new Championship trophy. More than 7,500 fans came through, the largest crowd in the event’s history.

For the BMO Fan Experience, we turned one matchday touchpoint into a season-long presence at BMO Stadium, home of LAFC and Angel City FC. The Fan Fest featured a custom one-on-one Pannacourt, Soccer Skeeball and Bench Soccer, while the BMO Experience Center gave supporters a photo booth that turned them into bobbleheads in their team’s kit. The program also introduced BMO’s new co-branded team debit cards to tens of thousands of fans.

As a new entrant into the Los Angeles market, we were fortunate to be connected with the team at Southport to manage our brand activations. They have shown themselves to be creative, trustworthy, and tremendous on-site problem solvers.

4. Move Fast When the Moment Shows Up

Some of the best activation ideas come with almost no warning. When the LA Rams won the NFC Championship, we had less than five days to produce a Super Bowl LIII send-off rally at the SoFi Stadium construction site.

In those five days, our team handled city approvals, parking, security, staging, vendors, AV, brand ambassadors and event insurance, all while tracking the budget. More than 12,000 fans showed up, got their first look at the future stadium and helped drive incremental seat license sales. This is where our emphasis on operations and logistics pays off: strong front-end preparation is what makes a fast turnaround possible.

Event Activation Ideas for Festivals and Live Events

Festivals come with a built-in crowd that’s there to have fun. The right event activation gives them one more thing to love.

5. Own the Festival Footprint

For Netflix Is a Joke Fest, Netflix and Superfly trusted Southport to manage site operations for the Outside Joke Festival at the Hollywood Palladium. That meant staffing, vendor coordination, and building and running the event space through setup, show days and breakdown. Our brand ambassadors also ran activations inspired by Netflix’s comedy lineup and supported backstage hospitality.

The results: more than 30,000 attendees over two weekends, the festival’s most successful turnout to date.

6. Create Your Own Signature Event

We also create and produce our own festivals. San Diego Taco Fest brings 30 of the city’s top taco restaurants to the waterfront for one day, with Lucha Libre wrestling, a Chihuahua Beauty Pageant and live music.

It has drawn more than 12,000 fans, sells out every year and serves more than 40,000 tacos. Guests stay an average of 4+ hours, which gives sponsor brands plenty of time to connect. Running our own festivals also means we know exactly what sponsors need from the other side of the fence.

7. Personalize a Race Sponsorship

Runners love anything they can customize. As title sponsor of Bay to Breakers in San Francisco, Alaska Airlines wanted to feel like part of the race rather than a logo on a banner. We built a live screen print station, build-your-own race day kits, custom sunglasses, an on-course DJ, a post-race lounge with hammocks and a custom trail mix bar.

The results: more than 7,500 custom race day kits, 815 tweets from the pre-race Twitter Machine and 700+ trail mix bags made at the finish line.

At the SDCCU OC Marathon, we paired quick surveys with a digital spin wheel for prizes, added an Instagram vending machine at the expo and let finishers build their own Marathon Survival Kit with a live screen-printed design.

Travel and Airport Activation Ideas

Travelers have time to spare and a reason to celebrate. That makes airports and gates a great stage for a brand moment.

8. Celebrate a New Route at the Gate

In spring 2026, Alaska Airlines launched three new international routes from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport: Rome, London Heathrow and Reykjavik. We produced a gate activation for each inaugural flight, each inspired by its destination.

The Rome gate became an Italian festa with a gelato cart, a DJ and a live cannoli station where the chef piped fresh cannoli alongside Alaska Airlines CEO Ben Minicucci. The London gate turned into a garden party inspired by Chelsea in Bloom, with fresh florals, pastries, specialty tea and a live string quartet. Every departing passenger left with a branded gift pouch, and all of it happened inside the constraints of a live airport terminal.

9. Surprise a Community With a Once-in-a-Lifetime Moment

For Flight 35, Alaska Airlines, Nike and Kevin Durant surprised four youth basketball teams from Los Angeles and Oakland on a charter flight to a Las Vegas tournament. During the Oakland layover, we transformed the gate with a custom lacing station for the players’ new KD11 shoes and a breakfast bar with Alaska’s signature smoothies. Players got headphones and neck pillows as they boarded, and Durant flew with the teams, signing autographs and taking selfies along the way.

Southport has been a key partner in concepting and executing major events and activations for Alaska Airlines. Their expertise, attention to detail and level of service is unparalleled.

Touring and Street Team Activation Ideas

Some audiences are spread across many markets. Touring programs and street teams bring the brand to them.

10. Take the Experience on the Road

The TaylorMade Tour Experience brings tour-level club fitting and same-day custom club building straight to the driving range at courses nationwide. We’ve run the program for more than four years, growing it from a single-region beta to three tour routes running events four to five days a week, with product shipping, inventory and reporting handled by our team.

The results: in 2025 alone, the tour completed more than 30,000 fittings across 396 events in 38 states.

11. Put Brand Ambassadors Where the Audience Already Is

Since 2010, our Chevrolet Street Teams have brought Chevy to music festivals, zoo weekends, sports venues and dealership activation days. Brand ambassadors use vehicle displays, surveys and prize redemption to start conversations and capture leads.

The results: the program has grown from 25 activation days to more than 300 per year, with 500,000 customer interactions and more than 7,000,000 impressions across markets.

Southport Marketing handles all the experiential marketing for the two Dealer Groups I manage, St. Louis and Omaha/Lincoln. This program is a big factor in the success of Chevrolet in these markets.

VIP and Invite-Only Activation Ideas

Your most valuable customers deserve an experience they can’t get anywhere else.

12. Reward Your Most Loyal Customers

To kick off the NFL season, Alaska Airlines hosted the Russell Wilson Happy Hour, an invitation-only event for Mileage Plan members, Alaska Visa cardholders and giveaway winners on a Seattle rooftop terrace. Guests took photos with Wilson, joined a Q&A moderated by Joel McHale, played branded games, enjoyed food from his favorite Seattle restaurant and left with a gift bag. Explore more ideas like this on our VIP experiences page.

What These Activations Have in Common

Every idea on this list looks different, but the strongest experiential activations share a few traits:

  • A clear goal, set before the build
  • A hands-on moment worth walking across the venue for
  • A way to capture data, like surveys, sign-ups or redemptions
  • Something to take home or share
  • Operations planned as carefully as the creative

That last one is where we put a lot of our energy. About 90% of our capabilities are delivered in-house, including staffing, fabrication, fulfillment, warehousing and our own trucking fleet. With every stage under one roof, we can keep the experience true to the original vision from first sketch to final breakdown.

Brand Activation FAQ

What is a brand activation event?

A brand activation event is a live experience where people interact with a brand directly, such as a fan fest, product trial, pop-up or VIP night. It’s built around a specific goal, like awareness, trial, leads or loyalty, and it works because people take part instead of just watching.

How do you plan a brand activation?

Start with the goal and the audience, then choose the location and footprint that fit. From there, design the experience and plan the logistics: permits, staffing, fabrication, shipping, setup and breakdown. Every program has its own timeline and budget, and our post on how long it takes to plan an experiential marketing event breaks down what affects both.

How do mobile tours work as brand activations?

A mobile tour takes one experience to many markets on a planned route. The TaylorMade Tour Experience, for example, runs three routes at once, with fitting, club building, product shipping and reporting managed week to week so every stop feels the same for the customer.

How do you measure a brand activation’s success?

Choose your metrics before the event. Common ones include attendance, engagement, dwell time, surveys completed, leads, redemptions, social impressions and sales lift. The right mix depends on the goal you set at the start.
